The Objective
The objective of The Pit Game is simple – collect all the cards of one commodity before your opponents do. The commodities in the game are represented by different colored cards, such as corn, wheat, and hay.
The game requires at least 3 players, and can accommodate up to 8 players. The more players, the more chaotic and exciting the game becomes.
The Setup
To set up the game, simply shuffle the deck of commodity cards and deal out all the cards face-down to each player. The remaining cards are placed in a pile in the center of the playing area, known as “the pit”.
Each player then flips over the top 4 cards from their deck and places them face-up in front of them. These cards will form the player’s hand for that round.
The Gameplay
The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of 3 phases – “the trade phase”, “the call phase”, and “the pit phase”.
The Trade Phase
During this phase, players simultaneously offer trades to one another by shouting out the commodities they are looking for. For example, “2 wheat for 1 corn”. Players can trade with anyone, and can offer multiple trades at a time. The goal is to try and gain the cards you need to complete a set.
The Call Phase
After a set amount of time, determined by the players before the game begins, a bell is rung to signal the end of the trade phase and the beginning of the call phase. During this phase, players can no longer offer trades and must use their remaining time to try and collect the cards they need.
The Pit Phase
After the call phase, all players must try to collect the cards they need by blindly reaching into the “pit” and grabbing cards. Players can take as many cards as they want, but must be careful not to take too many and end up with a penalty. Once a player has collected all the cards they need, they shout “Pit!” to signal the end of the round. The player with all the cards of one commodity wins that round and earns points.
Ending the Game
The game ends when a player reaches the pre-determined point goal, usually 500 points. The player with the most points wins and is declared the ultimate Pit Game champion.
