As a self-proclaimed normal person, I never would have thought that my mundane life would be threatened by anything. That is until I stumbled upon a popular role-playing game (RPG) that has taken the world by storm. At first, I was intrigued by the concept and enjoyed playing the game for a few hours every day. But soon, I realized that the game was taking over my life and altering my perception of reality.
For those who are unfamiliar with RPGs, it is a type of video game where players assume the roles of fictional characters in a fictional world and control their actions. The goal of these games is to complete quests, defeat enemies, and level up the character’s skills and abilities. It may seem like innocent fun, but for me, it has turned into an all-consuming obsession.
The Temptation of Escapism
At first, playing the RPG was a way for me to escape from the monotony of my daily routine. I would log in for an hour or two after work and immerse myself in a world full of magic, adventure, and endless possibilities. But as I progressed further into the game, I found myself spending more and more time playing, neglecting my responsibilities and real-life relationships.
The addictive nature of RPGs is no secret. With every level gained and quest completed, I felt a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It was a welcome distraction from the mundane tasks of everyday life. However, I soon realized that I was no longer playing the game for enjoyment, but rather as a means of escaping my own reality.
Falling Into the Game’s Tropes
One of the fascinating things about RPGs is the use of common tropes to create an immersive and engaging experience. These tropes include the hero’s journey, the chosen one, and the ultimate villain. As I delved deeper into the game, I found myself falling into these tropes and identifying with my character’s struggles and triumphs.
As a result, my everyday interactions became influenced by my gameplay. I started comparing people in my life to characters in the game and expected them to behave accordingly. When they didn’t meet my expectations, I found myself becoming frustrated and disappointed. It was as if I had lost touch with reality and could only see the world through the lens of the game.
Realizing the Threat
It wasn’t until a friend pointed out how much the game had consumed my life that I realized the true threat it posed. I was neglecting my health, relationships, and responsibilities all in the pursuit of virtual achievements. My mundane life was being threatened by the addictive nature of the game and the unrealistic expectations it had created.
With this realization, I made the difficult decision to delete the game and focus on getting my life back on track. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary for my well-being. It has been a few months since I quit playing, and I can honestly say that I feel more connected to reality and those around me.
“Escape reality, not your life.”
These words serve as a reminder to me that while it’s okay to indulge in a game or two, it should never come at the cost of our real-life experiences. As for me, I may have lost my character and progress in the RPG, but I gained back control of my life.
In Conclusion
The tropes of an RPG may seem harmless, but they have the power to consume and alter our perception of reality. It’s essential to recognize when a game or any form of escapism begins to threaten our everyday lives. As for me, I’ve learned my lesson, and I’ll stick to a healthy balance between my mundane life and the virtual world of RPGs.
