The Clue/Cluedo game, sometimes just called “Clue,” is a popular board game that has been enjoyed by families and friends for decades. History of Clue/Cluedo Game

The game was first created by Anthony E. Pratt, a retired solicitor, in 1944. He was inspired by the murder-mystery dinner parties that were popular at the time. The first edition of the game was called “Murder!” and was released by the company Waddingtons in the UK. In 1949, the game was licensed to the American company Parker Brothers, and they changed the name to “Cluedo” to avoid confusion with other games. It wasn’t until 1950 that the game was released in the United States under the name “Clue.”

Game set up

Clue/Cluedo is played on a board that represents the mansion where the murder took place. The board consists of nine rooms, including the hall, dining room, kitchen, ballroom, conservatory, billiard room, library, study, and lounge. Each player chooses a character to play as, and each character has a unique backstory and abilities. The game also comes with six weapons, including the candlestick, dagger, lead pipe, revolver, rope, and wrench.

How to play

To start the game, each player is dealt three cards, one card from each category – character, weapon, and room. These cards represent the three elements of the murder, and they are the only cards the players know at the beginning of the game. Then, the rest of the cards are shuffled and placed in a pile in the center of the board. One card from each category is secretly placed in the envelope, and the remaining cards are used to create the “crime scene.” The player to the left of the dealer goes first, and the game continues clockwise.

On each turn, the player rolls the dice and moves their character token that number of spaces on the board. If they land in a room, they may make a suggestion about the murder. They can suggest that a specific character committed the crime, with a specific weapon, in that room. For example, they may say, “I suggest that Professor Plum committed the murder in the dining room with the revolver.” The other players then check their cards to see if they have any of the suggested cards. If they do, they must show that card to the suggesting player, indicating they are not the murderer, and neither is the weapon or room mentioned. If no one can show a card, the suggestion is proven to be wrong, and the next player takes their turn. If a player thinks they know the solution, they may make an accusation on their turn instead of a suggestion.

Ending the Game

The game ends when a player makes a correct accusation or if they make a wrong accusation and are eliminated from the game. If there are only two players left, both of them must make an accusation on their next turn, or else the game will end in a draw. The player who correctly solves the murder wins the game.

Variations of the game

Over the years, different versions and variations of Clue/Cluedo have been released. There have been themed versions based on popular movies, TV shows, and books, as well as variations for younger players. There is also an online version of the game that can be played on various devices.
