Khet 2.0 is a two-player strategy game that combines the ancient Egyptian game of ‘Senet’ with the legendary game of chess. It was first released in 2005 and has since gained a loyal following among board game enthusiasts. The game is designed by Luke Hooper and Michael Larson and is published by Innovention Toys.
Gameplay
The game is played on an 8×10 grid and each player has a set of 16 pieces in different shapes and sizes. These pieces are either silver or red and have mirrored surfaces on one or more sides. The objective of the game is to capture your opponent’s Pharaoh piece, which is the only non-mirrored piece on the board.
The game starts with each player placing their pieces on the first two rows of their side of the board. The pieces are placed randomly, with the exception of the Pharaoh piece, which is placed at the center of the back row. Each player can also choose to place a Scarab piece, which has the ability to rotate any piece 90 degrees per turn.
Note: The starting setup of pieces is based on the Senet game, as Khet 2.0 is essentially a modernized version of the ancient game.
Once the game starts, players take turns moving one piece per turn. Pieces can only move according to their shape and never diagonally. The goal is to use your pieces to attack and capture your opponent’s pieces by directing the laser beam from your Sphinx piece towards them. Once the laser beam hits a mirrored side of a piece, it is destroyed and removed from the board.
Strategy and Difficulty Levels
Khet 2.0 may seem like a simple game at first glance, but it has the complexities of chess with the added complexity of the laser beam. The game requires players to think ahead and anticipate their opponent’s moves. The mirrored pieces also add a unique layer of strategy, as players can use them to redirect the laser beam towards their opponent’s pieces.
The game offers five different levels of difficulty, from beginner to expert, making it suitable for players of all skill levels. The AI of the computer opponent is designed to give players a tough challenge, making each game a unique experience.
Expansions and Variations
Khet 2.0 has several expansions and variations that add new challenges and twists to the game. The most popular expansion is the ‘Laser Khet 2.0: Tower of Kadesh’, which adds a new piece, the Tower of Kadesh, that players can use to block their opponent’s laser beam. Other expansions include ‘Khet 2.0: Eye of Horus’, which adds new mirrored pieces, and ‘Khet 2.0: Storm Dancer’, which introduces a new mechanic of rotating pieces with a flick of the board.
Final Thoughts
Khet 2.0 is a game that offers an exciting mix of ancient history and modern strategy. It is a simple game to learn but has the complexities to keep players engaged for hours. With its unique gameplay and various expansions, Khet 2.0 is a must-have for any board game enthusiast.
