The Parquet Game, also known as Parquetry or Blockade, was first introduced in France in the early 19th century. It quickly gained popularity among the elite and was commonly played in the salons of the upper class. Its name comes from the French word “parquet” which means wooden flooring, reflecting the wooden board used in the game.

Over time, Parquet Game was introduced to other countries, including England, where it became known as “Barricade”. It also gained popularity in Germany, where it is known as “Eckball”. Rules of Parquet Game

The Parquet Game board consists of a grid with 81 squares and nine different pieces, each with a unique shape. The aim of the game is to be the first player to arrange all your pieces on the board following a specific pattern. The starting position for each player is shown below.

Starting Positions:

The player with the black pieces moves first, followed by the white player. On each turn, a player can choose to either move one of their pieces or add a new piece to the board. There are three possible moves that a player can make:

  1. Move a piece: A piece can only be moved one square at a time, either vertically or horizontally. It cannot be moved diagonally or jump over other pieces.
  2. Push an opponent’s piece: If a player’s piece is next to an opponent’s piece, they can push the opponent’s piece to an adjacent empty square. This counts as one move.
  3. Add a new piece: If a player does not have any pieces left on the board, they can add a new piece to the board on any empty square. This counts as one move.

The game ends when one player successfully completes the parquet, as shown below, by arranging their pieces in the following pattern:

Parquet Pattern:

Once a player has completed the parquet, the other player has two more moves to try and block their opponent from completing the parquet. If they are unable to do so, the player who completed the parquet is declared the winner.

Strategies for Parquet Game

In Parquet Game, it is crucial to plan ahead and think strategically. Here are some tips to help you improve your chances of winning:

  • Focus on completing your parquet: The ultimate goal of the game is to complete the parquet, so prioritize moving your pieces towards that goal.
  • Block your opponent: Pay attention to your opponent’s moves and try to block them from completing their parquet. Push their pieces away from the pattern or use your pieces to block their path to the desired squares.
  • Keep your pieces close to each other: By keeping your pieces close to each other, you can protect them from being pushed or trapped by your opponent’s pieces.
  • Take calculated risks: Sometimes, taking a risk can pay off. If you see an opportunity to push an opponent’s piece, consider the possible outcomes before making a move.
  • Practice and learn from your mistakes: The more you play, the better you will become at the game. If you lose, take note of your mistakes and try to improve on them in the next game.
