The Origin of Sumire Game

The game originated in the Edo period (1603-1868), when it was played among aristocratic girls. The name “Sumire Game” comes from the fact that the game’s pieces or tokens are made from the flowers of wild violets called “sumire” in Japanese.

How to Play

To play Sumire Game, you will need a set of 30 wild violet flowers, a large piece of cloth, and small dolls or figures. The number of players can vary, with three players being the most common, but it can also be played with up to five or six players.

First, the players sit in a circle on the cloth with the dolls or figures placed in the center. The players take turns picking up a flower and putting it on their forehead, holding it in place with their fingers. The remaining flower stalk becomes the player’s “tail”.

Once all players have a flower on their forehead, the game begins. Each player must try to take another player’s flower without losing their own. If the player loses their flower, they are out of the game.

The game continues until there is only one player left with a flower on their forehead, making them the winner.

The Symbolism of Sumire Game

Aside from being a fun game to play, Sumire Game also has symbolic meanings. The act of “stealing” another player’s flower represents the rivalry or competition between the players. The last remaining player with a flower on their forehead is said to have good luck for the coming year.

In addition, the wild violet flowers used in the game are also believed to have healing properties and are thought to bring good health to those who play.

Modern Adaptations

Today, Sumire Game is still played in Japan, particularly during the Hinamatsuri celebration. However, there have been modern adaptations of the game as well, such as using cloth or paper flowers instead of real flowers. It is also a popular game to play at children’s birthday parties or family gatherings.

Sumire Game is not only an entertaining game, but it also carries cultural significance and historical value. So, next time you visit Japan during the Hinamatsuri celebration, make sure to join in on a game of Sumire and experience this traditional Japanese game for yourself!
