If you’re a fan of card games and enjoy spending time at your local tavern, the tavern cards game may be just the activity you’ve been looking for. This popular game has been played in pubs and bars for decades, offering a fun way to socialize and pass the time with friends and strangers alike.
The Basics
Tavern cards game is a simple game that requires a standard deck of playing cards. It can be played with as few as two players, but is more enjoyable with a group of four or more. The objective of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
The dealer shuffles the deck and deals out the entire deck to all players, face down. Each player takes their cards and holds them in their hand without looking at them. The game begins with the player to the left of the dealer laying down a card facedown in the center of the table.
The Action Cards
There are special cards within the deck known as action cards that add excitement and unpredictability to the game. These include the King, Queen, Jack, and Joker. Each of these cards has a specific action associated with it:
- King: When a King is played, the next player must play a card of the same suit or draw a card from the draw pile. If they don’t have a matching card, they must draw from the pile until they do. If they draw the matching card, they reverse the gameplay and the previous player must match the suit or draw.
- Queen: When a Queen is played, the next player must play a card of a different suit or draw a card from the draw pile. If they don’t have a different suit, they must draw until they do. If they draw the different suit, they reverse the gameplay and the previous player must match the suit or draw.
- Jack: When a Jack is played, the next player must draw two cards from the draw pile and skip their turn.
- Joker: The Joker acts as a wildcard and can be played at any time. The player who lays down the Joker gets to choose what suit the next player must match or draw.
The Game Goes On
The game continues in a clockwise direction, with players either matching the previously played card or drawing from the pile. When a player has no more cards to play, they must say “Last card” to let the other players know they are down to their last card.
If a player fails to say “Last card” and someone else plays a card, they must draw two cards as a penalty. However, if a player correctly calls “Last card” and another player plays a card, the game goes back to the previous player and they must draw.
The Winner
The first player to get rid of all their cards is declared the winner. However, in some variations of the game, the last player with cards remaining is declared the winner. Either way, it’s a fun and social way to spend an evening at the tavern.
So next time you’re at the pub with friends looking for something to do, why not suggest a game of tavern cards? It’s a great way to pass the time and maybe even make some new friends over a few rounds of cards.
