How to Play

The Signal State Game is a two-player game that can be played on any flat surface. It consists of a game board with a grid of squares, a set of game pieces, and a deck of signal cards. The objective of the game is to be the first player to connect all four of your game pieces in a square, horizontally, or diagonally. The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of three stages:

  1. Signal Phase
  2. State Phase
  3. Game Phase

Signal Phase

In the Signal Phase, both players draw five signal cards from the deck. These cards represent the different states that your game pieces can be in. For example, a card may show a game piece with its corners colored in, indicating that it is in the corner state. The Signal Phase is essentially used to set the stage for the rest of the round by determining the possible moves each player can make.

State Phase

In the State Phase, players take turns placing their game pieces on the board in the state indicated by the cards they drew in the Signal Phase. For example, if a player drew a corner state card, they must place one of their pieces in a corner square on the board. The catch is that players can only place their game pieces in empty squares, and once a piece is placed, it cannot be moved. This is where strategic thinking comes into play as players must consider their future moves and try to block their opponent’s progress.

Game Phase

In the final phase, players take turns moving their game pieces around the board according to the rules of the game. Each game piece can move one or two squares horizontally or vertically (but not diagonally) in a single turn. The game pieces can only move between squares that are connected (i.e. share an edge with) the square the game piece is currently in. This is where players must carefully plan their moves and try to outwit their opponent.

Winning the Game

The game ends when one player successfully connects all four of their game pieces (in a square, horizontally, or diagonally). The player who makes this winning move is declared the winner of the round, and the game continues until one player wins three rounds.
