Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen is a strategy role-playing game developed by Aquaplus and Sting Entertainment. It is a remake of the original Utawarerumono game, which was released in 2002 for the PC in Japan. The remake was released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in Japan in 2018, and is set to be released for the PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe in 2020.
Story
The game follows the story of Hakuowlo, a man who wakes up in a village with no recollection of his past. He is taken in by the people of the village and given the name Hakuowlo. As he tries to adapt to his new life, he learns that the world is in a state of chaos, with multiple factions vying for power.
Through his journey, Hakuowlo meets various characters, both human and non-human, who become his allies and enemies. As he learns more about his past and the true nature of the world, he must make tough decisions that will have an impact on the future of the realm.
Gameplay
Being a strategy role-playing game, Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen features a combination of turn-based battles and visual novel-style storytelling. The game has two main modes: Adventure mode and War mode.
In Adventure mode, players will progress through the story, making choices and engaging in conversations with NPCs. Choices made in this mode will affect the relationships Hakuowlo has with other characters and may have consequences later in the game.
In War mode, players will engage in grid-based battles with armies and monsters. Combat is turn-based, with players taking turns moving their characters and attacking enemies. Players can also use special abilities and magic spells to turn the tides of battle. As players progress through the game, they can recruit new allies and train them to become powerful warriors.
Remastered Graphics and Audio
This remake of Utawarerumono features remastered graphics, with fully redone character models, backgrounds, and cutscenes. This gives the game a more modern and polished look while still retaining the charm of the original game.
The game also features a fully re-recorded soundtrack, with over 100 new tracks composed for the remake. Players can switch between the original and the new soundtrack, allowing them to experience the game in different ways.
Final Thoughts
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen is a must-play for fans of strategy role-playing games and the original Utawarerumono series. With its updated graphics and re-recorded soundtrack, it is a game that players can thoroughly enjoy, whether they are new fans or returning ones. The game also sets the stage for the release of the sequel, Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, which will both be released for the PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe later in 2020.
